No-contract web design: Why monthly website fees don't make sense

You hired a web designer & the site got built. Now you're paying $300 a month and you're not totally sure why.

"Maintenance," they say. Okay. Maintaining what, exactly?

The maintenance myth

A website isn't a car.

It doesn't need an oil change every 3,000 kilometers or air filters swapped. Once it's built, it mostly just sits there, doing its job.

The idea that your service business website requires ongoing monthly attention is, in most cases, an easy revenue model disguised as a necessary expense.

What "maintenance" usually means in practice: someone logs in once a month, clicks "update plugins," and charges you $300 for the 30 seconds of work (some months they don't even do anything.)

Why agencies love retainers (and you probably shouldn't)

Predictable monthly revenue. That's it.

Retainers make sense when there's real ongoing work, fine. SEO, ads, content adds, active development, etc.

But a maintenance retainer on a finished website? That's just a "free money" subscription you didn't really choose.

The other thing nobody mentions either is that retainers create dependency. Suddenly you need the agency for everything: your files, your domain, your hosting, all gatekept.

Actual recurring payments

  • $10-$20 / year: Domain (the rights to use your name are as URL)

  • $120 / year: Email (custom email for name@business. Usually prices per email)

  • $200-$500 / year: Hosting (the "land" fee where the website sits in the virtual world, usually combined with the builder/CMS cost, e.g. Webflow, Wix, etc.)

That's really it. If it's not any of these things, it's a money grab. Wordpress app updates should be complimentary.

What a one-time payment website actually looks like

You pay, the site gets built, and you own everything. Your domain, your files, your hosting login, all that.

No monthly invoice.

No "you need to stay on our plan."

If you want changes down the road, you ask and just pay for that specific thing.

This is how it should work for most small and mid-size service businesses. Your website isn't a living, breathing organism that needs caring for.
